Pie Plate Frame
This frame was designed for John Hall’s acrylic on canvas painting Artist’s Palette 2. The design came to me after viewing the work. I was drawn to the repeated ribbing in the objects in the painting: the cap of the paint tube, the rolled paint tube, the edge of the aluminium pie plate, etc. I felt that this “ribbing” might be a suitable motif for the frame, believing that a smooth frame without ornament would not support the dynamic nature of the painting’s composition. I finally decided to focus on the pie plate edge and mimicked the pleating of it in the carved outer edge of the frame. The frame is finished with our black polish and 12K gold leaf over black clay with just enough sparkle to attract the eye, leading to the recognition of the pie plate pleating and the knowledge that the frame is specific to this painting.
